Ramya's Gurus

Ramya Ramnarayan is an excellent performer, choreographer and a teacher who blends tradition with innovation. She has studied Bharatha Natyam under the renowned lineage of Guru Swamimalai Rajaratnam and abhinaya (expression) under Padmabhushan Smt. Kalanidhi Narayanan, who are regarded as exponents in their field in India, where this art form originated. Ramya has studied the art of wielding cymbals, from the world renowned dancer, Dr. Padma Subramanyam. She has also studied South Indian Classical Music, for over 10 years and hence has a good working knowledge of the music for which the dance is usually performed.

Her strict adherence to tradition coupled with the much needed adaptability for changing times, has made her carve her own niche among the cream of dancers. Ramya has choreographed several dances. Her choreography is known for identifying and presenting philosophical as well as mundane ideas, expression of appropriate moods and rhythmic footwork and grace. She uses live orchestral ensemble and blends various melodies and rhythm and allows for improvisation of the dance with supporting music. Several of her students have received grants form the State of New Jersey for advancing their training in the field of Bharathanatyam and they have selected her as a "Master Artist”. Her distinct choreography, beautiful expression, and firm rhythmic footwork identify her as superb dancer. Her quality and dedication is what makes her a remarkable teacher and she is truly loved by all of her students. The rapport that she has with her students when she teaches is a real pleasure to watch and be a part of.

Ramya has regularly performed at the famous festival organized by the International Dance Alliance at Music Academy, Chennai, India. She has won the much coveted “Kalaimamani” and “Nadanamamani” titles which are among the highest honor conferred upon a performing artist in India. The Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey have passed a joint resolution recognizing Ramya Ramnarayan for her commitment, dedication and achievement in the art of Indian Classical Dance. She is the Artistic Director of Nrithyanjali Institute of Dance. She holds a visiting faculty appointment in the Dance Department at Mason Gross School of Arts, affiliated to Rutgers University.
